Earthquake Preparedness
Emergencies Can Happen Anytime - Are You Ready?
What should I do DURING an earthquake?
The USGS (United States Geological Survey) is a science bureau within the United States Department of the Interior . The USGS provides science about the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods; the water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources we rely on; the health of our ecosystems and environment; and the impacts of climate and land-use change.
The USGS recommends you take the following actions during an earthquake.
- If you are INDOORS -- STAY THERE! Get under a desk or table and hang on to it (Drop, Cover, and Hold on!) or move into a hallway or against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.
- If you are OUTSIDE -- get into the OPEN, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys, and anything else that might fall on you.
- If you are DRIVING -- stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving, watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.
If you are in an area affected by an earthquake you should:
- Expect aftershocks, and follow the steps above whenever you feel shaking.
- Tune into radio, TV or social media for official guidance from your local officials.
Remember to review and practice your Personal & Family Preparedness Plan with all the members of the household.
Why should you prepare?
Preparedness can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. You can also decrease the impact of disaster or danger completely! As a team member of the MediSys Health Network, your level of personal and family preparedness helps enhance the overall preparedness efforts at the workplace. During an emergency, MediSys Health Network relies on you to help sustain normal operations so that we can continue serving our patients.
